It began as an act of defiance. A rebellion against composition and meaning, an antithesis of academia.
In creating this new collection, I made a conscious decision to abandon all the conventional painting principles I had previously learned, which was not something I found easy, to reduce the work down to its bare essentials of line, shape, space, value, form, texture, and color. I even committed to painting with my untrained left hand to reduce technique and artistry, relying purely on visual prompts and my instinct as an artist. In this newfound freedom, I broke rules, I mixed things up, I collaborated with gravity, and I painted in UV light. The result is pure abstraction created without the constraints of preconceived notions or extensive preparation.
My new collection, Abstract Habitats, now serves as a residence for the Neon Tetra fish concealed within. After all, I am the girl who paints fish. These little fish invite the viewer to explore the painting as if inside an abstract aquarium. This interaction engages the observer in a deeper analysis and offers a new perspective on what abstraction can convey.
